Face to FACE: Arts Walk Hudson 2011

For Arts Walk 2011 FACE Stockholm opened its doors to young artists and invited children of all ages to create self-portraits using only cosmetic pigments.

A table strewn with mirrors, brushes and a multitude of media in brilliant colors beckoned those perusing the art on Warren Street in Hudson, NY to stop and try their hands at creating a masterpiece of their own. 

And who could resist?! 

Inspired by their own reflections in the mirror and fueled by cookies and lemonade, 64 artists from ages 2 to 17 worked intently to create interpretations of their own faces.

Inspired by the independent spirit and magnetic presence of silent film legends such as Louise Brooks, our look for Fall 2011 reflects the uninhibited nature and intellectual daring of the borrowed-from-the-boys attitude and style.

In the December issue of Vogue, makeup artist Lucia Pieroni shares her makeup tips for the holiday season calling FACE Stockholm's Crème Blush "the difference between 'I like your makeup' and 'You look great.'" Check it out! 

Helen Andersson, FACE Stockholm's Lead Makeup Artist and Educator, has earned international acclaim for her proficient and diverse work in all aspects of print, film, and media. It is for this reason that each and every one of FACE Stockholm's makeup artists in the US participate in training with Helen, and each comes away with not only the required skills, but a new and enlightened approach to makeup application.

Helen believes that makeup artistry is more than skin deep: a subject's mood, personality, body and mind must all be taken into consideration. "I look at makeup like sculpting more than like painting," Helen says, "When I'm thinking about someone's skin, I think about all of their features, it's more than just painting on colors."

Helen's holistic approach comes in part from growing up in the Swedish countryside, where she learned from her grandfather about the power of natural healing. From that early foundation, she went on to study herbs and natural therapies such as Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of traditional medicine, in both America and India.

This knowledge has been essential to her work as a makeup artist and the relationships Helen develops with her clients, whether they are celebrities, retail shop walk-ins or returning customers, have made her one of the most in-demand artists in FACE Stockholm's history.
Helen's bridal makeup services at FACE Stockholm are particularly sought after and her work has been featured in many publications, including Martha Stewart Weddings and Essence Magazine.   

Listening to Helen talk about her favorite experiences over the span of an 18-year makeup career in New York City, would lead most people to go from being wide-eyed and star-struck to aghast at the number of things that can go wrong on a film set!

For instance, Helen remembers shooting a series of long-form commercials for Diesel that were really more like short films, so involved were the story lines. One of these was shot in a swamp in New Orleans. "It was a real life adventure; gargantuan snakes and poisonous spiders dropping down from the trees...we had guards with guns to protect us from the alligators and crocodiles in case they were hanging around the set."

FACE Stockholm and Girls Gone Green

In 2007-08, in celebration of our 25th anniversary, we donated all of the proceeds from sales of our 25 År special edition lipstick to Girls Gone Green, an environmental program for young girls at the Lower Eastside Girls Club.

This summer, our donations helped 30 girls spend five days at sleepaway camp in the Adirondak Mountains. These 30, in addition to 20 other girls will also be able to attend a 6-week Day Camp in NYC. All at no cost to their families.

The Lower Eastside Girls Club develops programs to build Ethical, Entrepreneurial and Environmental awareness and leadership among disadvantaged girls living in NYC's Lower Eastside. We urge you to support this wonderful organization that is helping to educate and empower the next generation of women. Visit their website at girlsclub.org.

On February 12, 2009, one of the world’s leading airlines, Germany’s Lufthansa, had the distinct honor of hosting the 17th annual Grand  Travel Awards in Stockholm Sweden.

Held at the Grand Hotel, companies recognized for top performance in such categories as best airline, hotel, cruise line, car rentals were awarded what has come to be known as “The Oscar of the Travel Industry.

As part of the celebration, 14 airhostesses were flown in from Frankfurt to walk the catwalk in period uniforms — with styles ranging from the 1930s through the 1990s. Makeup applications from FACE Stockholm’s artists corresponded with the look of each era.

   

A first class evening, the event embraced both the technological advances and distinguished fashion trends of the industry with a toast of Lufthansa’s original in-flight cocktail — Lufthansa Nostalgic — champagne with a splash of liquor. Here’s to traveling in style!
